JGA presents the Sustainability
Awards 2025 finalists
‘People, planet and prosperity’ define this year’s stellar nominees
HONG KONG, 19 June 2025 – Twenty entries from 15 sustainability champions across the globe have reached the finals of the Sustainability Awards 2025 by JWA (Jewellery World Awards). This year’s Awards saw outstanding submissions from 11 countries and regions, with the shortlisted organisations representing the broad spectrum of the jewellery industry, Celine Lau, Director of Jewellery Fairs at Informa Markets Jewellery, announced at a media conference today.

“After a rigorous evaluation process, our judges have identified 20 exceptional entries showcasing powerful sustainability initiatives. These finalists demonstrate not only the critical importance of building a sustainable future but also prove that collective action can make this vision a reality,” Lau said at a media gathering kickstarting Jewellery & Gem ASIA Hong Kong (JGA) at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC).

The finalist list is comprehensive – and intentionally so, she continued.

“At the core of these Awards is our commitment to spotlight exemplary sustainability achievements across the industry. Each finalist brings forward unique insights and practical solutions that can guide others. By recognising this range of outstanding work, we create more opportunities to share their stories, ensuring they connect with diverse audiences and communities worldwide,” noted Lau.

Established in 2012 to recognise best business practices across the jewellery industry, JWA expanded its platform in 2024 with the introduction of the Sustainability Awards. These accolades honour companies demonstrating tangible commitments to environmental stewardship, climate action, social empowerment and resource-efficient innovations throughout their operations.

The shortlisted nominees presented exceptional entries across five categories: Environmental Stewardship; Community Catalyst; Tech For A Sustainable Future; Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, and Sustainability Leadership. Among them stands a small-scale miner whose water projects, educational initiatives and employment opportunities create gentle ripples of positive change throughout their community; a jeweller who “turns dust into silver, waste into art, students into changemakers and industrial zones into green sanctuaries;” a pearling company that has embraced ocean conservation as a guiding principle in their operations, and diamond and jewellery manufacturers who incorporate renewable energy sources and circular economy practices into their activities. These organisations hail from Australia, Belgium, China, Hong Kong, India, Italy, Kenya, the US and Vietnam.

The submissions were assessed and scored by an independent five-member judging panel, comprising experts who have distinguished themselves in their respective fields, both from within and outside the jewellery world. They are John Mulligan, Head of Sustainability Strategy at the World Gold Council (WGC) and President of the Sustainable Development Commission of the World Jewellery Confederation (CIBJO); Brandee Dallow, President of the Community for Ethical Jewelry (formerly Ethical Metalsmiths) and Chief Sustainability Officer of Grandview Klein Diamonds; Caroline Yuan, Vice President of the Shanghai Diamond Exchange (SDE); Andrew Lau, Director of ESG Advisory for Colliers Asia, and Jan Porter, Director of ESG at B2B beauty solutions provider, Meiyume.

The winners will be announced in July and feted at an Awards Presentation Ceremony on 17 September at the Fair Reception of Jewellery & Gem WORLD Hong Kong (JGW). Award Recipients would also be invited to participate in JGW’s Sustainability Heroes Panel Series.

What the judges say
The judging panel applauded the sustainability vision demonstrated by all entrants, highlighting how each submission – whether selected as finalist or not – helps shape a more sustainable industry future.

“It is both an honour and a privilege to once again serve as a judge for JWA’s Sustainability Awards. In a time defined by fragmentation, volatility and uncertainty, the importance of steadfast commitments to positive social and environmental outcomes cannot be overstated. Now more than ever, we must not only uphold our values but redouble our efforts to foster meaningful change, wherever and however we can,” commented second-time Awards judge John Mulligan. “That is why it is so inspiring to witness such a diverse array of jewellery companies and projects dedicated to driving progress. While I am particularly drawn to initiatives that demonstrate a lasting commitment to measurable, long-term impacts, there is much to celebrate across nearly all submissions. Many of them represent significant contributions to sustainability, deserving of wider recognition and encouragement.”

Serving on the judging panel offered an unexpected dual reward: Deep professional insights alongside the privilege of shaping industry recognition, said Caroline Yuan.

“It is my honour to serve as a judge for the JWA, and the process of reviewing the entries’ materials has been an invaluable learning experience for me. The shortlisted enterprises, diverse in scale and business models, have demonstrated exemplary commitment to implementing sustainable development principles, setting benchmarks for the jewellery industry’s expansion,” shared Yuan. “The ancient Chinese adage, ‘True benefit flows from the wellspring of righteousness’ encapsulates the essence of sustainable business. Enterprises’ dedication to enhancing social value constitutes the foundation for realising their own intrinsic worth. I sincerely hope that the JWA platform will continue to play a positive role in advancing the industry’s development.”

The judges were impressed by the finalists’ sustainability initiatives, which have the potential to inspire transformation beyond the jewellery world, shared Brandee Dallow.

“As a judge for JWA’s Sustainability Awards, I was profoundly inspired by the dedication and vision of this year’s finalists. These companies are not only excelling in their day-to-day business, they’re going above and beyond to drive meaningful change across our industry and the communities it touches. Their commitment to sustainability is not a side project; it’s a core value, and it matters just as much as any commercial success. Recognising and celebrating these leaders is essential as we shape a more ethical and resilient future not just for jewellery, but for the world. It is now up to the rest of our industry to follow in their footsteps, embracing sustainability not as a trend, but as a shared responsibility and a driver of lasting impact,” Dallow commented.

Reflecting on the submissions that highlight the jewellery sector’s remarkable strides toward sustainability, Andrew Lau said, “It has been a privilege to serve as a judge for the Sustainability Awards by JWA for the second consecutive year. This year’s finalists truly exemplify the global momentum behind sustainability in the jewellery industry. Their diverse backgrounds and innovative approaches – spanning Environmental Stewardship, Community Catalyst, Tech for a Sustainable Future, DEI and Sustainability Leadership – demonstrate that sustainability milestones can take many forms. I was particularly inspired by the companies leading the charge in decarbonisation since their efforts require both technological innovation and deep engagement with people through education. Recognising these sustainability champions is vital – not only to celebrate their achievements but also to inspire broader industry change and cross-sector collaboration for a more sustainable future.”

The Awards illuminates this reality: The path to sustainability is an infinite journey fuelled by enduring commitment.

“True environmental and social sustainability can only be achieved by continuous effort, year after year,” second-time Awards judge Jan Porter shared. “I especially commend the finalists that have been on this sustainability journey for many years, demonstrating unwavering commitment and resilience in their efforts to create a more sustainable future. Their continuous dedication serves as a powerful example in our community, reminding us that lasting change is possible. We hope these awards allow us to recognise their effort.”
